Home Interior 3 Picture Frame And Art
There is a certain magic to using a 3 picture frame setup on a wall. Once I explain this will make sense in how it works with how our mind processes what we see.
Our brain likes to organize things. It is just our natural state. It takes pieces of anything to place them into manageable parts with this organization.
What is often missed is how this impacts the appearance of a room. The same process takes place visually the moment we see anything.
This concept is used in many aspects of home design such as landscaping and even within building.
If you wish to use an even number of pieces on a wall a similar strategy can be used. To maintain symmetry this article can help yet compare to see which will work best for your space.
A Picture Frame By 2’s Or 3
If you place four pictures or pieces of artwork on a wall the eyes will immediately break those four into pairs. We begin to see 2 and 2 rather than the whole of four.
Often this is why people have odd numbers of bushes planted in front of their home. The goal with most decoration is to draw the eyes to the whole rather than a single focal point.
By our mind creating pairs we begin to section off the room in how we view it. In using three pictures or paintings the mind is prevented from being able to pair off as easily without leaving the odd number out.
We begin to see the group or the whole rather than a part.
Keep in mind this will work with almost any odd number if it is arranged well. So 5, 7, or even 9 could be accomplished in multi panel art.
The difficulty with increasing the numbers is arrangement. As more wall art or pictures are added naturally the mind will want do divide off a portion of them.

To help with this arrangement using 3 per wall may be more beneficial. Size obviously can impact this. Yet if one wishes to use more than 3 use size to your advantage.
Altering the size with 3 smaller and 2 slightly bigger frames will help. As to the arrangement placing them in such a way that they are not in a line will aid as well.
Use the smaller frames filling the center of a wall space while the larger are on the outside opposite corners creates a framing effect. In this way it may appear as a rough collage yet is seen as a whole.
Ordered chaos can be more helpful than neat and clean.
3 Piece Canvas Wall Art
Here is where the concept really begins to shine. If you do not want your wall space looking like it came from the 1960’s it is not too difficult.
In using the above methods we add 3 piece canvas art. Essentially this is artwork which has been split into three different canvases.
This can be done in different ways. Most often for the greatest effect it is like taking a big picture and cutting it into 3 different parts. When hung close together you can still see the whole yet it offers some options.
You can stagger the pieces in arrangement. If they are large enough you can place more space between them on the wall allowing for a more decorative arrangement.
While the art is split between three different canvases it does not require an abstract theme though often this is used. You can do the same with an image with great impact.
Where this begins to lose impact is with the alternative method I have seen used. Some will use the same theme in abstract art between 3 different unique artworks.
While this is a nice arrangement for art on the wall it still is three individual works. There is nothing wrong with the idea if it is what you want or seek to achieve.
Wood Art As A 3 Piece Design
Wood art can be used in the same manner. When wood is introduced into the decorating the options expand dramatically.
Imagine multiple planks that have been joined together edge to edge similar to decking and hung on a wall. Pictures are then hung on these panels.
The wood acts as an accent. Each plank which forms this panel can be of different colors.
Additionally smaller panels can be made from these planks and individual pictures hung from them. Artwork is just as easy to display and in my opinion really adds to the aesthetics of the room.
Yet where this pays dividends is when you want to hang more pictures than groups of 3 or 5.
By creating three different wood panels to your desired size you can hang even or odd number pictures or decor items to your liking. The rule of 3 in how the mind groups things is not broken here.
The reason why is that the 3 wood panels become the canvas as so to speak. The eyes will be drawn to the overall impact of these 3 panels rather than grouping pictures.
In this way you are no longer limited by trying to find a balance in arrangement or number. It also will aid in protecting your walls from having so many holes in them. The additional accent adds to the overall impact of the room.
This concept would be most likely used in the rooms you wish to showcase more in. This is especially true with family photos.
It allows you to display multiple generations from both sides of the family while maintaining organization in a clean way.
When it comes to artwork it provides a backdrop where the average will be seen as more unique. People may think you have an original painting by some artist but there is no need to tell them its a print just arranged well in a nice frame.
By introducing these wood panels more opportunities open. Displaying other wood art becomes easier to add.
Shelving for plants of the same wood blends in. Suddenly this mix of modern and natural comes together as one unit giving a unique feel and backdrop to your home decor.
What Wood To Use For A 3 Picture Frame?
These plank panels can be made easily. Older boards which have some weathering to them is common and a nice effect.
Also wood burning is another option to adding character or an aged effect to new boards. The species will often determine the outcome of the wood color and look.
Nevertheless how the wood is finished in stain whether traditional or a semi transparent for a more stressed looked in finish can be used. A simple poly protective coating is placed on the wood and it is ready to put together.
In order to make the plank panel there are options for joining them together. Once cut to size hardware can be used mounted to the back keeping the boards uniform as you wish.
This may be the easiest way for most. Simply place the boards edge to edge and mount together with the hardware.
Alternatively if more space between the boards is desired you can use the picket fence approach. Lay the planks vertically across at least two horizontal boards.
Three may be better depending on size. Then mount the vertical planks to these horizontal boards creating your panel. It is that easy.
Why Use These Methods For A 3 Picture Frame?
If one is wanting a minimalist design to their home decorating these methods provide the most impact for the least amount of space used.
By staying with the rule of 3 you bring the greatest visual appeal to the space especially if it is small. Smaller rooms or spaces by their nature become more challenging.

Yet as we get older we often want to add to what we have. It is human nature. We want to display our parents and show off pictures of the kids.
At the same time we want to have some artwork on the walls adding to the decor.
The problem is any room can not only become too busy but it begins to look messy. We slowly turn into that 1960s home where our photo albums are on the wall rather than in the drawer.
By using wood designs such as the panels we obtain more options while maintaining organization and appeal.
One does not have to sacrifice what they want for the sake of keeping a room pretty or preventing more holes from being put into the wall. Getting creative with wood art opens possibilities that otherwise would not be as appealing.
Arranging A 3 Picture Frame And Room Furniture Together
This same principle of 3 can be used on a free standing 3 picture frame. Anywhere that pictures are placed or decor is set an arrangement of multiple pieces can be kept to 3.
Many do the same with furniture. Often when we purchase a living room set we find the couch and love seat.
An additional third piece for seating not only helps the guest but also your arrangement. If the room is large enough it creates a more personal feel where entertaining becomes easier as people can sit more face to face.
Now combine the arrangement of wall art, the idea of a 3 picture frame, and furniture pieces. Here the whole comes together as a room rather than one section or wall.
Often the arrangement is focused around an entertainment system of some kind such as a tv. The flat screen may be on at a party but people want to talk.
In using two couches and a love seat it is simple geometry allowing the entertainment system to be the fourth side.
With something like a coffee table in the center it makes for easy serving to that room if one desires. Alternatively a buffet along a back wall creates a self contained space where people do not have to roam around your house.
The rule of 3 applies to many aspects of your home decoration.
The 3 Picture Frame At Work Or The Office
We have all seen the picture frames which allow you to place three pictures within them. Also the wall frames which allow 5 or more pictures to be places within them are common.
These are great for work or the office.
Some use them at home and indeed they are good especially for smaller spaces. Yet you do not have to be confined to their use for your larger spaces in showing off the family pictures.
A lot of people like them because it provides a way for some organization to display many pictures at once.
The problem with places like a living room is that they are not easy to see from across the room. When seated you see the frame but the detail of the pictures become obscure. One would rather see the image than a frame.
If money is of a concern and you are on a limited budget you can still use the wood plank idea. Here is where pallet wood will help you.
Old pallets are normally easy to come by on the cheap. The wood can be worked just as easily as a plank.
The goal is turning the wood from its plain appearance into something with style. If you do not like wood burning then use alternating stain colors between dark and light.
Semitransparent stain here can help as well. In this you have a solution for displaying what you wish on a cheap budget.
These smaller picture frames do great for our smaller spaces especially such as the office. I prefer to keep them out of my living spaces unless it must be used.
One Large Wall Art Piece Or 3 Smaller?
For big walls which have some open space it can be tempting to get a large piece of artwork to hang. Large is not bad unless the depth of the room does not permit it.
Think of it like this. If you go to the movies and sit too close to the screen it takes away from the experience.

The same is true with wall art. The scope of the setting in what it will allow is important. Just because you may have a large wall space does not always mean a large piece should be used.
If the viewing scope would create an unnatural feel in viewing then use 3 pieces of art in that space that are a little smaller.
Big walls are challenging in their own way that can at times be a pain. When done well it adds a lot of beauty but sometimes sketching the desired look before it is applied can help gain some scope.
In using 3 smaller pieces of art there is the added benefit of allowing more decor on the wall without it appearing out of place.
